How to Quit BetMGM: Self-Exclude From Casino and Sportsbook

Chains and a padlock locking out BetMGM and other gambling apps: how to self-exclude from BetMGM

To quit BetMGM, self-exclude through your state's program. BetMGM's own guide sends you to the State Resources tab on its responsible gaming page to find your state's process. US exclusions are typically 1 year, 5 years or lifetime, and according to BetMGM, once a self-exclusion is in place "you can't cancel it."

When I quit gambling, I self-excluded from every casino and betting site I had access to, for as long as each one allowed. It isn't a perfect fix, and there are workarounds. But it made gambling harder, and that was a big step forward for me.

Time-out vs. self-exclusion

BetMGM also offers time-outs, time limits, deposit limits and loss limits. Those slow you down, but they're built to end. Self-exclusion is the one to use if you want to stop. While you're excluded, BetMGM says you're refused wagers and removed from marketing lists, and any winnings from gambling while excluded are forfeited.

How to self-exclude from BetMGM, step by step

  1. Withdraw your balance first. Do it now, all of it, and don't place "one last bet" with it.
  2. Find your state's process. Open BetMGM's responsible gaming page and go to the State Resources tab. If you can't find it, contact BetMGM's customer support and ask to self-exclude.
  3. Sign up with your state. In most states this puts you on a list every licensed operator has to honour, so it blocks every licensed sportsbook and online casino at once, not just BetMGM. In New Jersey, for example, you file in person with the Division of Gaming Enforcement in Atlantic City, bring ID and have your photo taken.
  4. Choose the longest period offered. Lifetime, if your state has it. A short break just means a date circled on the calendar.
  5. Delete the app and turn off notifications.

Block every licensed sportsbook at once

  • US states: search "[your state] gaming commission self-exclusion", or ask the helpline below. Many state lists cover land-based casinos too.
  • Ontario: BetGuard blocks every regulated Ontario site with one registration.
  • Alberta: one registration blocks every licensed site.

Don't stop at BetMGM

Block it everywhere: how to block gambling sites on your phone and computer, and how to block gambling payments at your bank.

  • Every account you have. Search your email for sign-up and promo messages to find sites you've forgotten, and self-exclude from each one.
  • Offshore and crypto casinos. State lists can't block them. Exclude on each site directly.

Block the workarounds

  • Blocking software. GamCare lists several tools, including BetBlocker (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and Fire OS) and Gamban. Install one on every device.
  • Your bank. Ask your bank about blocking gambling transactions on your cards.
  • Your feeds. Mute sportsbook accounts. Promotions peak around big games.
  • Someone you trust. Tell one person what you've done.

If it still doesn't feel like enough

Self-exclusion kept me out of the casinos, but for a year and a half it didn't quiet my head. What finally did was filling that time with something else: here's how chess helped me quit gambling.

If you're struggling right now

Pawn of God never uses affiliate links or promo codes. BetMGM's process varies by state and may change; this guide follows BetMGM's self-exclusion guide as of October 31, 2026.
